The funk automotivo, also incorrectly known as "Brazilian phonk," is a musical subgenre that originated from funk paulista, which itself descended from funk carioca, a genre that emerged in the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro in the 1980s. It is also known as funk montagem, funk slowed, funk mandelão, funk bruxaria, and funk submundo.
