Rhizomarasmius pyrrhocephalus

Species of fungus

Rhizomarasmius pyrrhocephalus is the type species of the genus Rhizomarasmius, split from Marasmius due to morphological differences such as the cystidia and the rooting stipe. It has a 1–2.5 cm (0.39–0.98 in) wide orange colored cap and a long, rooted black stipe with velvety hairs. Like its original genus, Marsmius, Rhizomarasmius has a white spore print and attached gills. This mushroom is known mainly from North America East of the Rocky Mountains, and grows from Spring to Fall on leaf litter and wood.
